BANGOR, Maine – Paced by four double-figure scorers, the University of Maine men's basketball team closed the preseason with a 82-40 rout of the University of Maine Presque Isle on Thursday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
Mykhailo Yagodin (14 pts., 6-of-9 FG)
Isaiah White (12 pts., 5-10 FG),
Andrew Fleming (11 pts. 3-of-7 FG) and
Vilgot Larsson (10 pts. 4-of-6 FG) led the offense on the day, combining for 47 points.
Ilija Stojiljkovic dished out six assists and grabbed six rebounds, while adding three steals.
Sergio El Darwich distributed five assists, stole possession from the Owls five times, while knocking down three shots for seven points.
Stephane Ingo stuffed the statsheet with four blocks and nine rebounds in the second half.
The Black Bears combined to shoot 54.1 percent (33-for-61) from the field, including 40.9 percent from long distance (9-for-22), while limiting the Owls to shoot just 23.2 percent (13-for-56).
Maine took some time to get the offense churning, but started the contest on an 11-0 just shy of six minutes into the contest. The Black Bears would overpower the Owls the rest of the first half, taking a 25-point lead into the locker room with a 38-14 advantage. Yagodin led the charge offensively with 10 of his 14 points coming in the first half.
UMPI failed to climb back into the game in the second frame, never coming within 25 points of the Black Bears. The balanced Black Bear offense had 10 players combine for 44 points in the second half, with Fleming and Larsson both tallying seven points in the final frame.
Shyquinn Dix led the Owls with 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting, converting all five of his free throws. Wilburn Griffiths picked up six caroms off the glass.
The Black Bears open the 2018-19 regular season this Tuesday, one the first of six games to start the season at Denver. The opening tip at Magness Arena is set for a 9:00 p.m. EST start.
