Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Schmidt-Svejstrup Helps Men's Ice Hockey Tie UConn, 2-2

HARTFORD, Conn. - Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup's last minute goal in regulation helped the men's ice hockey team tie the University of Connecticut Huskies, 2-2, on Saturday afternoon at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.

Maine (2-3-1, 0-1-1 HE) had three power play opportunities, including a 5 on 3 chance, in the first period. Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup and Eduards Tralmaks each hit the post with a shot during those opportunities. Jeremy Swayman saw and saved five shots in the first 20:00 of play.

First goal (1-0 UConn): In thanks to two separate Maine penalties, the Huskies (3-2-1, 1-0-1 HE) scored the first goal of the game in the second period at the 7:51 mark. Ryan Smith was called for a five minute major and game misconduct. Chase Pearson was called for a penalty shortly after the Smith infraction. UConn was set up for a two minute 5 on 3 advantage, until they were called for a penalty. The Black Bears managed to hold off the Huskie offensive attack long enough to only be down one man. Seconds into the 5 on 4 power play, Alexander Payusov found the back of net. Evan Wisocky set up the play and gave his squad a 1-0 lead early into the second period.

Second goal (2-0 UConn): Brady Keeper was called for cross checking with 2:02 left in the second period. The Huskies patiently worked the puck around the Black Bears' defense until Wisocky found Payusov, again, all alone in the far side face-off circle. Payusov fired the shot and scored his second power play goal of the period. UConn held onto the 2-0 lead throughout the rest of the frame.

Third goal (2-1 UConn): Chase Pearson scored the Black Bears first goal of the game. The junior's goal came on the power play. Rob Michel saw that his line mate was left unmarked in the face-off circle. Pearson one-timed the puck over Adam Huska's shoulder and pulled his team to within one goal with seven minutes left in the game.

Fourth goal (2-2): Schmidt-Svjestrup somehow corralled the puck from a Rob Michel pass and jammed home the game tying goal with 1:22 left in regulation. Michel's pass found its way through the entire UConn defense. Schmidt-Svjestrup did not try to possess the puck, instead was focused on re-directing the puck into the net. The game tying goal would be the last of the contest. The two teams played a scoreless, five minute overtime period as the game would end in a 2-2 tie.

Notes: - Jeremy Swayman finished the game with 26 saves, including 11 in the third and overtime periods.

- The Black Bears went 1-7 on the power play, while they were able to kill two of the nine Huskie power play opportunities.

- Maine stood in front and blocked 17 UConn shots.

Next: The Black Bears host the University of Massachusetts Lowell next weekend. The first game of the two game series will take place at the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine, on Friday November 2nd. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
