America East Recognizes Five Maine Black Bears in 2017 Baseball Awards Banquet

Bec, Schwanz, Laweryson, Sardinas, and Kerbs all honored at the 2017 Awards Banquet
LOWELL, Massachusetts - Five Maine Black Bears were honored at this evening's America East Awards Banquet on the eve of the 2017 America East Baseball Tournament.
The #5 seeded Black Bears saw two members make the All-Conference Second Team, two members make the All-Rookie Team, and one make the All-Academic team.
All-Conference Second Team:
Christopher Bec - Chris Bec earned himself the catcher slot on the America East All-Conference second team with a conference leading .360 batting average in the regular season and tied for the conference high in doubles with 17. This comes after Bec was named as the America East Fan's Choice Player of the Year, and started in all 48 of Maine's games this season.
Tyler Schwanz - The senior right-fielder earned an outfielder spot on the second team in his final season as a Maine Black Bear, leading the team with six home runs and 34 RBIs. Schwanz ended the year with a .272 batting average and .456 on-base percentage. Schawnz saw action in every single game Maine played this season.
All-Rookie Team:
Hernen Sardinas - The rookie first-basemen took home All-Rookie honors after a successful season hitting .263 overall with 15 doubles, two homers, and 21 RBIs, and posting an impressive .987 fielding percentage. There was only one game that Sardinas did not start at first base, though he saw action in all 48 games as well.
Cody Laweryson - The Maine-native relief pitcher posted a 4-2 record this season with a 3.55 ERA in 33.0 innings pitched. Laweryson saw action in 18 games, one of them as a starter, allowing 30 hits, but striking out 33 while only walking 12.
All-Academic Team:
Caleb Kerbs - Besides being a constant anchor of Maine's infield, starting 45 of Maine's 48 games this year, Kerbs makes the All-Academic team with a 3.61 GPA. The Junior Sociology major also was named a member of "Team Maine", a collection of collection of the highest-GPA earning Sophomore, Junior, and Senior student-athletes, along with being named a Maine Scholar Athlete Silver Honor award winner. Kerbs chipped in this year with two triples and two homers on the season with 27 RBIs.
