Maine Baseball took the third game of the series vs. UMass Lowell at Mahaney Diamond, finishing the weekend with a 1-2 record in America East conference play. As the Visiting Team in the series, following the rescheduling to Orono due to weather conditions in Lowell, the Black Bears scored 7 runs in the top of the 2nd inning that proved too much for the Riverhawks to overcome.
Nick Silva got the start for Maine and left the game with one out remaining in the 4th inning, allowing 3 runs and striking out 5. Cody Loweryson came on to pitch two-and-a-third innings of scoreless ball, striking out 4 and claiming his first collegiate win.
John Arel allowed 2 runs over 1-and-a-third innings and
Connor Johnson got the save, throwing 1-and-two-thirds innings.
The 2nd inning outburst put the Black Bears on the scoreboard. It all started with a throwing error by the UML shortstop to put
Colin Ridley on base. Walks to
Caleb Kerbs and Hernan Sardinas loaded the bases before Maine began the two-out rally.
Danny Casals came to the plate and picked up an RBI on a wild pitch before being hit by the next pitch.
Jeremy Pena was next to be hit by a pitch, scoring Kerbs.
Christopher Bec drew a walk to bring home Sardinas and give the Black Bears a 2-run lead, followed by a 2-run single by
Tyler Schwanz to double that lead. After a pitching change UML hit
Colin Ridley, the 3rd HBP of the inning, to reload the bases and
Caleb Kerbs used his 2nd at bat of the inning to bring home 2 more runs with a single.
Caleb Kerbs scored an insurance run for Maine in the 5th inning after singling to right field and swiping 2nd base before moving to 3rd on a
Jonathan Bennett ground ball to short. Hernan Sardinas doubled down the right field line to score Kerbs for Maine's 8th and final run of the game.
Kerbs and Schwanz lead the Black Bears offense with 2 hits and 2 RBI each, while Bec reached base 4 times with 1 single and 3 walks and 1 RBI. Sardinas reached base 3 times with his RBI single and a pair of walks.
Maine is scheduled to host America East foe Hartford for 3 games at Mahaney Diamond for a pair on Saturday, April 8th and the series finale on Sunday, April 9th.
