Football Falls to No. 12 Stony Brook on Last Second Hail Mary

Black Bears finish season 4-6, 3-5 in CAA

Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine football team suffered a heartbreaking 20-19 defeat in its season finale to No. 12 Stony Brook when the Seawolves' Harrison Jackson hauled in a 35-yard touchdown on a last-second hail mary on Saturday at Alfond Stadium.

The Black Bears finish the season at 4-6, 3-5 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play while Stony Brook improves to 9-2, 7-1 after its fifth consecutive victory.

Chris Ferguson went 19-for-29 for 256-yards and a pair of scores, including a 59-yard score to Jared Osumah. Osumah hauled in four catches for a career-high 100-yard on his Senior Day while Jaquan Blair added a career-best seven catches for 54-yards.

Josh Mack rushed for 73-yards on 30 carries with a touchdown. Mack finishes the season with 1,335-yards to rank fourth best among Maine's all-time single-season rush leaders.

The Black Hole defense, which entered the game ranked sixth in the nation on third down defense (29.2%), continued the trend as it was able to hold Stony Brook to just 2-of-15 on third down. The effort on defense limited the Seawolves to just 67-yards on the ground, a season-low for the Black Bears, and just 289 total yards. For the third-straight game, Deshawn Stevens led the Black Bears in tackles (11) while Kayon Whitaker totaled nine stops. Demian Thomas' forced fumble, which was recovered by Sterling Sheffield, marked the only turnover in the game.

The Black Bears, who never trailed in the game until the final whistle, struck first midway through the first quarter. Ferguson hit Earnest Edwards for a 40-yard score on the first play of the Black Bears' second drive. A failed two-point conversion followed as Maine led, 6-0.

The defense forced a three-and-out and Maine took over on its own 21. Ferguson and the offense went back to work. Facing a third down at the Stony Brook 28, Ferguson tucked it away and scrambled for 25-yards down to the Stony Brook 3. A three-yard rush from Mack followed, putting Maine up 12. The Black Bears lined up to kick the point after but an offsides on Stony Brook moved the ball to the 1. Maine again lined up to go for two but the pass attempt was dropped. The Black Bears would lead, 12-0, entering the second quarter.

Stony Brook found the scoreboard late in the second quarter on Donald Liotine's 10-yard rushing score with 3:08 left in the half. Nick Courtney's extra point would cut the Maine lead to five.

Maine responded immediately when Ferguson hit Jared Osumah down the Stony Brook sideline for a 59-yard score on the second play of the ensuing drive. Brandon Briggs extra point would give Maine a 19-7 edge entering the half.

Neither team would score in the third quarter after Maine's 38-yard field goal attempt would sail wide left

Stony Brook again chipped the lead to five after Joe Carbone found Donavin Washington for an 11-yard score with 10:46 remaining in regulation.

The teams would trade three punts before Stony Brook faced a fourth and 12 at the Maine 41 with just over two minutes remaining. Carbone's pass to Nick Anderson would fall incomplete, giving Maine the ball back with 2:13 on the clock.

Stony Brook would use its final timeout and, after three Maine runs, would force a Black Bear punt with 39-seconds left.

Carbone, beginning at his own 27, would throw incomplete on first down. However, a pass interference on the Black Bears moved the ball to the 42. A 23-yard strike brought the Seawolves to the Maine 35 with just six seconds to play. On the final play of the game, Jackson leaped above the defenders to come down with a 35-yard touchdown, giving the Seawolves a 20-19 lead with no time on the clock.
