ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine men's hockey team burst out of the gates on Saturday night, finding the net five times in the first period on its way to a 6-3 win over the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks. Six different Black Bear founds the back of the net while 10 different skaters earned at least one point in the non-conference victory at Alfond Arena.
UMaine's five goal first period marked the first time since Oct. 22, 2010 in a game against North Dakota that the Black Bears notched five goals in a single frame and it was the first time since a Nov. 15, 2013 game against Boston University that six different players scored a goal.
The Black Bears jumped out to a lead just 1:01 into the game when
Chase Pearson fed a streaking
Eduards Tralmaks up the right wing for a deke and finish past Ryan Larkin. Just over a minute later,
Patrick Holway's power-play tally stretched the lead to 2-0.
Tralmarks worked his way onto the scoresheet again when he picked off the pick near at the hashmarks in the offensive zone and then threaded a pass to
Brady Keeper at the top of the left circle for a one-timer and a 3-0 lead just 8:07 into the first period. Holway would throw a puck towards goal that bounced off of
Patrick Shea to give the Black Bears a 4-0 lead and then
Mitchell Fossier finished off passes from Keeper and Holway on the power-play to secure the five-goal period.
Phil Knies was able to capitalize on the power-play with five seconds remaining in the opening stanza to make cut the deficit to four at the first break.
In a penalty-marred second period,
Tim Doherty finished off the scoring for UMaine after
Rob Michel threw a puck behind the net to
Emil Westerlund near the right post and the rookie fed it to Doherty in front for a finish past Larkin.
The RedHawks would score two more times in the game – on a second period 5-on-3 and with Larkin pulled for an extra attacker in the third – but it wasn't enough for the potent UMaine offense.
Jeremy Swayman (1-1-0) finished with 27 saves – including 11 in the third period – to earn his first career win. Larkin (1-3-0) finished with 18 saves while Grant Valentine finished with two in some middle relief action in the first period. Miami (1-3-0) held the final edge in shots over UMaine (2-2-0) at 30-26. Grant Hutton finished with two goals and one assist for the RedHawks while Gordie Green added two helpers.
UMaine finishes out a six-game home stand next weekend when it welcomes 2017 National Runner-up Minnesota-Duluth to Alfond Arena on Friday and Saturday.
