Orono, Maine -- Men's Basketball head coach Bob Walsh has announced the signings of Marcus Floyd and Ilker Er. Each will join the Black Bears in the fall of 2016.
Floyd joins the Black Bears after competing last season under coach Kyle Bankhead at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas, a nationally known prep program that plays one of the toughest schedules in the country. Prior to his time at Sunrise, he spent his final two years of high school at Trenton Catholic Academy in Hamilton, N.J. The 5-10 guard, who averaged 14.7 points per game for Trenton Catholic in the state tournament, helped lead his team to an appearance and runner-up finish in the Non-Public B South Final during his senior year. Floyd, who hails from Wilmington, Del. and spent his first two years of high school at the Phelps School in Malvern, Pa., also drew interest from Texas State, Idaho State, Iona and Louisiana-Monroe.
"Marcus is a very quick play making guard," said Bankhead. "His athleticism will translate well to the Division-I level. Offensively, he is almost impossible to keep out of the paint. I think his toughness and competitiveness sets him apart from other guards. He will do whatever it takes for his team to win. I absolutely loved coaching Marcus and think he can be a high level defender as he learns the defensive system under Coach Walsh."
"Marcus plays basketball with a chip on his shoulder," added Walsh. "He has something to prove every time he steps on the floor, and his competitive nature makes the people around him better. He's a talented scoring guard who can play both positions in the backcourt and create for himself or his teammates. He is thrilled about the opportunity he has to be a Black Bear and make a significant impact."
Er, a 6-6 guard, spent the past season at San Jacinto Junior College. While with the Ravens, Er, a native of Istanbul, Turkey, averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebs for a team which finished 22-10 in one of the best junior college leagues in the country (Region XIV). Prior to his time at San Jacinto, Er attended and played for Arlington Country Day (Florida). Out of high school, Er received scholarship offers from LSU and Rhode Island.
"Ilker is a skilled, versatile wing forward who can be a knock-down shooter for us and play multiple positions," said Walsh. "He's also a tough, mature young man with a team-first mindset who will fit in great with our program and appreciates everything the University of Maine can do for him on and off the court."
