Baseball Fights Off Elimination With 11-1 Victory Over UMBC

LOWELL, Massachusetts -- Maine Baseball (20-34) defeated UMBC 11-1 in the double elimination America East Tournament. John Arel set a career high for strikeouts in a game with 11. Brett Chappell went 4-5 on the night and Colin Ridley went 3-4 with three RBI's.
Maine plays tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. and face the lowest seed of either the loser of Binghamton v. Albany or Hartford v. Stony Brook.
The Black Bears scored 11 runs on 15 hits. Five Black Bears had extra base hits; Brett Chappell, Colin Ridley, Tyler Schwanz and Caleb Kerbs each had doubles and Danny Casals had a triple.
Maine struck first in the bottom of the first with two runs, Colin Ridley singled to right scoring Brett Chappell. The next batter, Ridley forced a rundown in a delayed steal attempt to score Pena.
The Black Bears scored two more in the bottom of the third with two more runs, Casals bunted with two strikes and the UMBC third baseman threw the ball into right field as Maine scored two runs and Maine took a 4-0 lead.
Maine opened the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth, Ridley kicked off the scoring with a single down the right field line driving in two runs. Later, Schwanz hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring their third of the inning and taking a 7-0 lead. Caleb Kerbs then reached on an error scoring one on the play. Chappell then singled to center scoring their fifth run in the inning. Maine then executed the double steal as Kerbs scored home, the Black Bears led 10-0.
In the following inning, Ridley hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring the 11th run of the game for the Black Bears.
UMBC pushed across one run in the top of the eighth, Mitchell Carroll singled to right field.
