ORONO, Maine -- Maine men's basketball was upset by UMaine Fort Kent, 80 to 75 at the Memorial Gymnasium in The Pit on Saturday night. UMaine Fort Kent's Rosevelt Smith Jr. had a game high 29 points on 12 of 17 shooting from the field and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Bengals in their first ever victory over the Black Bears.
Wes Myers led all Maine scorers with 18 points on the night, as he shot 4 for 10 from the field.
The Bengals shot 50.7 percent from the field on 34-67, they also pressured Maine on defense forcing 21 turnovers and had 11 steals. Stephon Bell had 15 points and Bobby Syvanthong added 14 points.
The Black Bears had four players in double digit scoring:
Wes Myers 18 points (4-for-10 from the field), Andrew Flemming with 12 points (5-for-9 from the field),
Austin Howard with 11 points (4-for-10 from the field) and
Aaron Calixte with 11 points (3-for-10 from the field).
After each team traded buckets to start the game, UMaine Fort Kent went on a 8-0 run to take a 12-4 lead with 13:59 remaining in the first half. The Bengals held the lead for the majority of the first half, until Maine tied the game at 31-31 with a three pointer from
Wes Myers, 2:27 remaining in the first.
UMaine Fort regained the lead heading into half time by a score of 36-34.
Maine earned their first lead of the game, in the first minute of the second half as Andrew Flemming converted on a layup giving Maine a 38-36 lead.Â
The Bengals started a 13-0 run at 16:08 in the second half that turned into a 57-44 advantage, their largest lead of the game, with just under 13 minutes to play.
The Black Bears answered with a 13-0 run of their own, sparked by six points from
Wes Myers tying the game at 57-57 with eight minutes remaining in the second half.
UMaine Fort Kent's Bobby Syvanthong scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half giving the Bengals the second half spark they needed. With just under three minutes to go in the second half, UMaine Fort Kent held a nine point advantage. Maine went on a 6-0 run with all six points coming from
Austin Howard, as the Black Bears trimmed the lead to 74-71.
After a miss free throw by UMaine Fort Kent, Andrew Flemming scored a layup in the paint to get the Black Bears to within one, 74-73, with :27 seconds remaining.Â
The Black Bears called a full court press and UMaine Fort Kent's Bobby Syvanthong broke free for a layup to increase the margin to three, 76-73. After the ensuing timeout by the Bengals, Maine earned an easy layup with :15 seconds, as the Bengals still were ahead 76-75.
UMaine Fort Kent made four of six free throws in the remaining seconds to secure a 80-75 victory.
The Black Bears open their season on November 11 as they travel to Virginia Tech to play the Hokies at 9:00 p.m.
