Baseball Drops Series Finale at NYIT 8-6

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) belted his fourth home run of the weekend, while Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) had a three-run shot, but it was not enough as the University of Maine baseball team fell to NYIT 8-6 on Sunday afternoon. The two teams spilt the four game weekend series.
Maine falls to 19-24 on the season with the loss, while NYIT improves to 14-25.
Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled and stole second base. Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) drew a walk and Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) was hit to load the bases. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) drew a bases loaded walk forcing home Heath. Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla.) also walked, sending Chappell home with Maine's second run of the game.
NYIT got the run back in the bottom of the frame. Joe Daru singled to lead off the inning and scored when Nick Sebastian grounded out.
NYIT took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Anthony Martelli walked and Michael Iglesias singled to shortstop. Martelli scored on a single by Lewis Rion. Iglesias scored the second run of the inning when Daru singled.
Maine grabbed the lead back in the top of the fifth inning. Heath led off the inning with a home run, his fourth of the weekend, over the right field fence. Chappell and Morrill both drew walks and Doran followed with a home run to right field, giving the Black Bears a 6-3 lead.
NYIT took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after a pair of two-run home runs by Daru and Louis Mele. The Bears added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Josh Canabal singled to left field and scored when Mele had an RBI single through the left side.
Maine threatened in the top of the ninth inning loading the bases, but was unable to push across the game-tying run.
Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went four innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out four. Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) pitched the fifth inning and allowed just one hit. Connor Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) suffered the loss as he allowed five runs, three of which were earned, over three innings. He falls to 0-1 on the season.
David Plotkin got the start for NYIT and allowed six runs on six hits over four innings. JP Lipovac picks up the win after pitching a pair of scoreless innings. Michael Auriemmo got the save.
Maine returns to action when it hosts Binghamton for a doubleheader on Friday, May 8. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM from Mahaney Diamond.
