Spectacular Day By Heath Leads Maine to Doubleheader Split

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) belted three home runs and picked up a win on the mound as the University of Maine baseball team split a doubleheader with NYIT on Saturday afternoon in Old Westbury, New York. Heath struck out a career-high 11 batters in the game. The Black Bears won the first game 6-2, before falling in the second game 10-5.
Maine moves to 19-23 on the season, while NYIT sees its record move to 13-24.
In the first game, Maine took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) singled up the middle and scored when Heath homered to left field. Maine added to its lead in the third inning. Adam doubled up the middle and scored when Heath doubled to left. Heath scored the fourth run of the day when Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) fouled out to right field.
NYIT got on the board in the bottom of the third. Frank Sanacore reached on a bunt single and stole second. He scored when Joe Daru singled up the middle. Daru scored when Louis Mele hit a sacrifice fly.
Adam and Heath teamed up again in the top of the seventh inning. Adam walked and Heath followed with his second home run of the game, giving Maine a 6-2 lead.
Heath went the distance for the Black Bears on the mound, allowed just two runs on eight hits while striking out 11 batters. He improves to 4-3 on the season.
In the second game, Heath continued where he left off in the first game. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) led off the game with a single to shortstop and Heath belted his third home run of the day, giving Maine the early 2-0 lead. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) sinlged and scored when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) reached on an error in the second inning to extend the Maine lead to 3-0.
NYIT tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Alonzo Paulino belted a two-run home run and Josh Canabal had a RBI single. The NYIT Bears took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a home run by Nick Sebastian. Daru had a RBI single in the bottom of the fourth as NYIT extended its lead to 5-3.
Maine knotted the score at 5-5 in the top of the fifth inning. Balzano singled to right and stole second base. He scored when Chappell singled to center. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) followed with singles to load the bases. Geary was then hit, forcing home Chappell.
NYIT grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run by Matt DiBiase. Mele added a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-5.
Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) got the start on the mound for Maine and went three innings. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits. Gosselin-Deschesnes suffered the loss and falls to 2-2 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) allowed three runs on two hits over two innings. John Arel (Burlington, Conn.) allowed two runs in the sixth inning.
Elias Martinez allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits over six innings to earn the win. He improves to 2-5.
The two teams close their four-game series on Sunday, May 3 with a single game starting at 12 noon.
