Courtney and Doran Lead Maine Past NYIT 9-1

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The University of Maine baseball team extended its winning streak to three games with a 9-1 win over N.Y.I.T. on Friday afternoon. Rookie pitcher Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) went the distance on the mound, allowing just one run while tying his career with five strikeouts. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) led the Maine offense as he went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Maine improves to 18-22 on the season, while NYIT falls to 12-24.
NYIT took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a home run by Louis Mele.
Maine took the lead in the top of the second inning. Doran singled and Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) homered to left field.
Maine added to its lead in the third inning. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) doubled to right field and scored when Geary reached on an error. Maine added one more run in the top of the fourth inning. Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) doubled to center field and scored when Brett Chappell (Rock Fall, Ill.) singled to left.
The Black Bears continued to add to their lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Doran singled down the right field line and Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) followed with a home run to left field.
Maine added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Morrill walked and Doran belted Maine's third home run of the game.
Maine capped the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Doran walked and Geary was hit-by-a-pitch. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second base. Doran scored Maine's ninth run on a wild pitch.
Courtney pitched his first career complete game. He allowed one run on eight hits with striking out five. He improves to 3-5 o the season.
Chris Johnson suffers the loss for NYIT. He allowed eight runs on nine hits and falls to 2-2 on the season.
The two teams continue their weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
