
Baseball Downs Thomas 9-2

ORONO, Maine – Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 9-2 win over Thomas College on Wednesday night at Mahaney Diamond.
Maine improves to 10-17 on the season with the win, while Thomas falls to 4-11.
Thomas struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Anree Benitez walked, stole second and then scored on a RBI single by Nik Beeson. Thomas added a run in the top of the third inning when Benitez tripled to center field and scored when Derek Kane hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) led off the inning with a bunt single and Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) followed and was hit by a pitch. Heath drew a walk to load the bases. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) drove home the first run of the game with a line drive that hit off the glove of the Thomas pitcher Matt Rutherford. Bussey scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.). Heath scored the third run of the inning when Geary singled to left field.
The Black Bears added a run in the bottom of the fifth. Bussey reached on an error and scored when Heath singled to right field.
Maine added four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) and Bussey each drew walks and then stole bases. Doran scored when Heath singled. Bussey scored on an error on the play. Morrill followed with a single and then stole second. Heath scored when Chappell singled. Christian Garabedian (Miami, Fla.) drove home Morrill with a single to left.
The Black Bears capped the scoring with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Balzano singled and scored when Morrill reached on a fielder's choice.
Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) got the start for Maine and allowed one run on three hits while striking out four. Jakes Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) allowed one run on one hit over two innings of work. He moves to 1-3 on the season Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) allowed one hit over two innings while striking out a pair. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) also went two innings and did not allow a hit while striking out four. Connor Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Black Bears, fanning one.
Matt Rutherford got the start for Thomas and went five innings. He allowed four runs, just three of which were earned, on four hits. He falls to 0-2 on the season. Jordan Johnson, Peyton Kennison, Rob Casarez and Rett Adams all also saw time on the mound for the Black Bears in the game.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when it travels to UMass Lowell for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
