Baseball Falls to UMass Lowell 4-3 in Extra Innings

LOWELL, Mass. – Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) had a two-run double in seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3, but the University of Maine baseball team fell 4-3 in overtime to UMass Lowell on Saturday night.
Maine falls to 10-18 on the season and 1-5 in America East play. UMass Lowell improves to 6-15 overall, 2-5 in conference play.
UMass Lowell took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Joe Consolmagno walked and scored when Danny Mendick doubled. Matthew Sanchez
singled to put runners on second and third. Both runners scored when Jimmy Ricoy singled to right field.
Maine got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) tripled and scored when the Black Bears hit into a double play.
Maine tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla.) singled through the right side and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) walked. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Sam Balzano drove home both runners with a double to left center field.
The River Hawks won the game with a run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Consolmagno singled to lead off the inning and scored when Ian Strom doubled to right field.
Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) got the start for Maine and went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out a pair of batters. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) went two innings and did not allow a hit. He struck out a pair of batters. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) went 2.1 innings for the Black Bears and allowed one run on a pair of hits. He falls to 0-1 on the season.
Andrew Ryan got the start for UMass Lowell and went six innings. He allowed one run on four hits. Nick Kuzia replaced Ryan and allowed two runs on two hits over a third of an inning. Tim Fallon did not allow a hit over 1.2 innings. Christian Lavoie went two scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Black Bears and River Hawks return to action on Sunday, April 12 when they play a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon at LeLLacheur
