Baseball Drops Third Game of Weekend Series Against Hartford, 6-3 in Twelve Innings

Orono, Maine – The University of Maine Baseball team dropped the third game of the weekend series against Hartford 6-3 on Sunday in a twelve inning battle.

With the loss Maine drops to 14-20 on the season and 4-7 in America East play, while Hartford improves their record to 13-22 and 6-7 in America East play.

Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) started the game for the Black Bears, it was his first start of the season, Gosselin-Deschesnes went seven innings allowing only four hits and giving up one run.

Through the first three innings it was a pitchers duel between Hartford's Brian Murphy and Gosselin-Deschesnes that only featured one hit.

In the top of the fourth, Hartford was able to score the first run of the game by successfully converting on a sacrifice fly to right field by Ryan Lukach that drove in a run to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Maine was able to respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning off of a Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) single to center that drove in Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) to tie the game at 1-1.

The Black Bears were able to score a run in the fifth after Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.). They also tacked on another run in the sixth to bring the score to 3-1.

Hartford was able to respond in the top of the eighth after stringing together a pair of hits to knot the game at 3-3.

In the twelfth inning after three innings of shutout ball, the Hawks were able to strike for three runs on two hits and capitalized on three Maine errors to secure the win 6-3.

The Black Bears return to action next weekend as they travel on the road to face America East opponent UMBC for a three game series starting on April 25.
