Baseball Drops 5-3 Decision to #2 Florida in Series Finale

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a home run however the University of Maine baseball team dropped the series finale to #2 Florida 5-3 on Sunday afternoon in Gainesville, Fla.
Maine falls to 4-12 on the season, while Florida improves to 14-2.
Florida jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Dalton Guthrie singled and scored when Buddy Reed single to center. The Gators added a run in the bottom of the second when Ryan Larson walked and scored on a Richie Martin doubled.
The Gators added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Martin led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. He scored when Josh Tobias doubled. Tobias scored the second run of the inning on a JJ Schwanz sacrifice fly.
Maine got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled and scored on a hit by Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) Maine pulled to within one run in the top of the seventh inning. Geary led off the inning with a home run to right field. Bussey singled to left field and scored when Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) doubled down the left field line.
Florida added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Christian Hicks reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Mike Rivera.
Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) got the start for Maine and went 3.1 innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out a pair. Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) went 1.2 innings and surrendered just one hit. Connor Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) allowed a run on three hits over two innings.
Dane Dunning got the start on the mound for the Gators. He allowed a run on four hits to earn the win and improves to 4-0 on the season. Taylor Lewis pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save, his fourth of the season.
Maine returns to action on Tuesday, March 10 when it faces Long Island University in a doubleheader beginning at 5 PM in Winter Haven, Fla.
