
Gelinas Gem Leads Baseball Past LIU Brooklyn 12-2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) allowed just one hit over seven innings to lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 12-2 win over LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday evening Winter Haven, Fla. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, while Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Maine improves to 5-12 on the season, while LIU Brooklyn falls to 3-4 on the season.
Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Chappell walked and advanced to second base on a wild pitch on the play. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) also walked to put runners on first and second. Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla.) singled to right field plating Chappell. Morrill scored Maine's second run on a single by Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine). Stypulkowski scored on a double steal attempt.
Maine added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Geary and Christian Garabedian (Miami, Fla.) drew back-to-back walks. Both runners advanced on a Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) sacrifice bunt. Geary scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly. Garabedian scored when Chappell doubled. Chappell scored the third run of the inning when Morrill singled to center field.
The Black Bears continued their trend with three runs in the bottom of the third inning behind four walks in the frame. Bussey drove home Geary when he reached on an error, while Chappell had a two-run single to center field.
Maine continued is scoring streak with a run in the top of the fourth inning, Heath singled and scored on a RBI single by Geary.
LIU Brooklyn scored their two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Jon McAllister drew a bases loaded walk to force home Vincent Tranchina, while Charles Misiano had a bases loaded single.
The Black Bears added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 12-2 final. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) walked and Geary followed with a single to left field. Bobby Brennan (Cape Coral, Fla.) reached on an error, plating Doran. Balzano followed with a double to center field and Geary scored on the play.
Gelinas was impressive on the mound pitching seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven batters in the game and improves to 2-1 on the season. John Arel (Burlington, Conn.) replaced Gelinas and allowed two runs on four hits over two innings.
Chas Lacko got the start for LIU Brooklyn and surrendered six hits over 1.2 innings. Rafael Guerrero went the next 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Matt Ornstein went the final inning and allowed two unearned runs.
Maine returns to action on Wednesday, March 10 when it faces Bucknell at 12:30 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
