Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Albany

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine baseball team split a doubleheader with Albany on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 4-3, before dropping the second game 9-5 in 10 innings.
Maine moves to 9-15 on the season and 1-2 in America East play, while Albany sees its record go to 5-8 overall, 1-1 in America East action.
In the first game, Albany jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind a two-run single to left field by Matt Hinchy.
Maine answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) walked and scored on a Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla.) sacrifice fly.
Maine took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled to right field and Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) reached on an error. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled to right field plating Balzano. Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) doubled and Bussey scored. Heath scored on a sacrifice fly by Geary.
Albany added a run in the top of the eighth to make it a 4-3 final.
Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) got the start and went 4.1 innings for the Black Bears. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four. Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) pitched 3.2 innings in relief to earn his first collegiate win. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out three. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) went the final inning to earn his fourth save.
Brendan Ryan went 5.2 innings for Albany and allowed one run on five hits. Terry Dugdale went two thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on three hits to suffer the loss. He falls to 0-1.
In the second game, Albany jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Eric Muller had a two-run double to highlight the frame.
Maine got a run back in the bottom of the inning. Balzano walked and scored on a ground out.
The Great Danes extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of the third behind a two-run double by Adam Mund.
Maine pulled to within one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bussey lead off the inning and Heath followed with a home run over the right field fence. Stypulkowski walked and scored when Christian Garabedian (Miami, Fla.) doubled to right center.
The Black Bears tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Chappell walked and scored when Stypulkowski doubled to right center.
The game, which was scheduled to go seven innings, remained tied until the top of the 10th when Albany scored four runs behind a three-run triple by Mueller.
Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) got the start for Maine and allowed five runs over 2.2 innings. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless relief where he allowed just one run and struck out six. Butler went the final two innings to suffer the loss. He falls to 1-2.
Stephen Woods allowed three runs on one hit over 4.1 innings. Dam DeCelle went one third of an inning. Joey Moore went the final 5.1 innings to earn the win and improves to 1-0 on the season.
Maine's game against Albany scheduled for Monday, March 30 has been canceled due to the weather. The Black Bears return to action on Friday, April 3 when they host Stony Brook at 4 PM.
