Heath Leads Baseball Past Wis.-Milwaukee on Mound and at the Plate

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) retired 17 of the final 18 batters that he faced en route to a 6-4 win over Wis.-Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon in Florida. He went seven innings and allowed three runs while striking out six. Heath also went 3-for-5 with a run scored an a RBI at the plate.
Maine jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) and Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) sandwiched an Alex Cabrera (Miami, Fla.) walk to load the bases. Balzano scored the first run of the game on a Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) sacrifice fly. Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Illinois) then doubled driving home both Cabrera and Heath.
Wis.-Milwaukee answered right back to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Luke Meeteer singled and scored when Sam Keonig singled. Derek Peake singled and scored when Tyler Hermann sinlged and Mitch Ghelfi scored when Mike Porcaro reached on a fielder's choice.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the Black Bears tallied three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, Rhode Island) reached on an error and Balzano followed with a single through the right side. Salcedo scored when Cabrera singled. Balzano scored the second run of the inning when Heath singled and Cabrera scored the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Doran.
Wis.-Milwaukee scored a run and threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Charlie Butler shut the door on the Panthers to earn his first save of the season.
Maine seniors Balzano, Heath and Morrill all had three hits in the game for the Black Bears, while Doran and Chappell each drove in a pair of Maine.
Heath was impressive on the mound, allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out six batters and picks up his first win of the season. Jonah Normandeau (Cumberland, Maine) pitched a third of an inning and allowed one run. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) also went a third of an inning. Butler pitched the final 1.1 inning and allowed just one run earn his first save of the season.
Wis.-Milwaukee used five pitchers in the game. Jake Tuttle got the start and allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings. Justin Jaquish allowed three runs in two thirds of an inning and suffers the loss.
Maine returns to action on Friday, Feb. 20 when it travels to Clemson to start a three games series with the Tigers.
