Maine Baseball Drops Series Opener to Clemson

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to Clemson in a game played in Augusta, Ga. on Friday afternoon. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) led the Black Bears at the plate as he went 2-for-4.
Maine falls to 1-4 on the young seaosn, while Clemson improves to 2-2.
Clemson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added to it in the second inning when Chase Pinder doubled and scored when Reed Rohlman singled through the right side.
Maine scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) doubled to left center and scored when Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) singled to left center.
The Tigers responeded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Rholman had a two-run single up the middle scoring Eli White and Andrew Cox. Clemson added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Steven Duggar hit a sacrifice fly scoring White. Westin Wilson them drove home Tyler Slaton, who had walked, with an infield single.
Clemson capped the scoring with two more runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings.
Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears and went four innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out four. Marks falls to 0-1 on the season. Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) replaced Marks. He went 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on four hits while striking out three. Chris Piteo (Middle Village, N.Y.) allowed two runs on three hits over the final 1.1 innings.
Matthew Crownover went seven innings for the Tigers and allowed one unearned run on five hits. He struck out seven and improves to 1-0 on the season. Alex Bostic and Paul Campbell each pitched a scoreless inning Clemson in relief.
The two teams continue their series on Saturday, Feb. 21. The two teams will played a doubleheader in Augusta, Ga. starting at 11 a.m.
