Baseball Drops Pair of Games to Wis.-Milwaukee

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Maine baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the University of Milwaukee Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon in Winter Haven, Fla. The Black Bears dropped the first game 12-3 and dropped the second one 11-7.
In the second game, Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled before Lou Della Fera (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) each drew walks to load the bases. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) followed with a two-run single driving home Balzano and Della Fera.
UMW answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Hermann, scoring Luke Meeteer. The Panthers added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Maine answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the 4-3 lead. Morrill had a single and Danny Diaz (Miami, Fla.) followed with a double scoring Morrill. Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine), who ran for Diaz, scored when Balzano reached on a fielder's choice.
Wisconsin Milwaukee answered back in the bottom of the frame with two runs. Daulton Varsho singled and scored when Luke Meeteer doubled. Meeteer scored on a single by Mitch Ghelfi.
Maine scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario), Morrill and Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) led off the inning with singles. Brett Chappell drove in Doran with a sacrifice fly. Morrill scored when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) doubled and Bussey scored when Lou Della Fera singled.
UMW tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Nick Unes singled and Tell Taylor followed with a home run. The Panthers then scored four goals in the bottom of the eighth inning to take an 11-7 lead. Nick Unes had a two-run double to key the inning for the Panthers.
Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) went 4.1 innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits. He struck out four batters. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) replaced Marks and went 2.2 innings, allowed one run without surrendering a hit. He suffered the loss. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Massachusetts) allowed three runs in one inning.
Joe Pavlovich went 3.2 innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He struck out six batters. Adam Reuss went 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Alex McIntosh went 3.0 innings and surrendered just one hit. Cody Peterson pitched the final inning and retired the side in order.
In the first game, Maine dropped a 12-3 decision to the Panthers. Wis.-Milwaukee scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Panthers added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Luke Meeteer reached on an error and scored when Derek Peake tripled. Peake scored when Mitch Ghelfi singled.
Wis.-Milwaukee scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 10-0. Nick Unes had the key hit in the inning, a three-run triple for the Panthers. UMW added two more runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 12-0.
Maine got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bussey led off the inning and drew a walk. Morrill followed with a double advancing Bussey to third base. Bussey scored when Balzano grounded out. Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) singled to center plating Morrill. Chappell scored the third run of the inning when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) doubled to right center.
Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) got the start on the mound and went 3.2 innings. He allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. He suffered the loss. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pennsylvania) went 2.1 innings in relief. He allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on six hits. Clay Conaway (Georgetown, Del.) pitched the final inning and allowed a pair of unearned runs.
Justin Langley picked up the win for UMW. He surrendered two hits over five innings.
The two teams conclude their four-game weekend series on Sunday at noon in Winter Haven, Fla.
