Orono, Maine— The University of Maine Black Bears took on their conference rivals UMBC, and earned a 1-0 win.
With a record of 1-1-1 in conference, Maine looked to earn a winning conference record. They did just that, improving to 2-1-1 in conference play and 7-5-1 overall. Maine goalie Claudia Dube-Trempe made four saves for her sixth shutout of the season.
Both teams played a defensive strategy in the first half, and were scoreless at the half, with Maine getting four shots on goal and UMBC with three. Maine made an excellent defensive play, saving a UMBC shot directly on goal. The Black Bears also had a great scoring chance off a rebound, but could not convert.
The second half remained scoreless until a goalkeeper foul on UMBC resulted in a penalty shot for Maine. Charlene Achille took the shot for the Black Bears, and shot the ball high and wide over the goalkeeper to give Maine a 1-0 lead with 18 minutes remaining in the game. This is the first penalty kick the Black Bears have had at home this season.
Maine was able to hold onto their lead, and a well earned 1-0 win against their conference rivals. They will travel to play New Hampshire on October 15th, and will return home to host Binghamton on October 18th at 1pm.
