Women's Ice Hockey Falls at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision at Providence on Saturday afternoon. Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minn.) scored Maine's lone goal, her third of the season for the Black Bears.
Providence jumped out to a 3-0 lead 15:32 into the first period. Maine answered with a power play goal by Richards at 17:02, when a Providence defender was called for checking. Shawna Lesperance and Kelly McDonald each assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.
The Friars got the goal back 2:24 later. The Friars added two goals in each of the second and third periods to earn the 8-1 victory. Cassidy Carels led the Friar offense with three goals, while Janine Weber added a pair of goals.
Providence finished the game with a 39-20 edge in shots on goal. The Black Bears were 1-for-5 on the power play, while Providence was scoreless in three opportunities.
Meghann Treacy (Lake Peekskill, N.Y.) suffered the loss for the Black Bears and falls to 0-9-3 on the season. She made 10 saves in 15:32, while allowing three goals. Mariah Fujimagari (Markham, Ontario) stopped 21 shots in 44:28.
Sarah Bryant made 19 saves for Providence and improves to 5-7-0 on the season.
The two teams finish their two-game weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 PM at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I
