Maine Falls to Stony Brook in 2012 America East Tournament

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The University of Maine baseball team advanced to face Stony Brook in the championship round of the 2012 America East Tournament, but in the end fell short, falling to the Seawolves 13-6. Maine ends the season with a mark of 28-28 on the season.
Stony Brook got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Travis Jankowski reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. Pat Cantwell followed with a bunt single and Jankowski moved to third base. Jankowski scored when Willie Carmona hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) walked and advanced to second when Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) grounded out. He scored when Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) singled to right field. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) then belted a home run, high over the left field fence, to give Maine a 3-1 lead. For Leisenheimer, it was his second home run of the season.
Stony Brook, however, answered right back. Steven Goldstein reached on fielder's choice. Cole Peragine and Kevin Courtney were then hit back-to-back to load the bases. Travis Jankowski, the 2012 America East Player of the Year, drove in a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second.
Stony Brook took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Maxx Tissenbaum singled to second base. Tanner Hivins was hit and Kevin Krause drew a walk. Tissenbaum scored when Goldstein had a RBI singled to Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) at shortstop. Peragine drew a bases loaded walk, driving home Nivins from third base. Krause scored when Courtney hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Seawolves the 6-3 lead.
Maine answered back. Tyler Patzalek doubled to lead off the top of the fourth inning. Ian Leisenheimer followed with a single, moving Patzalek to third base. Justin Leisenheimer doubled to left field, driving in Patzalek. Ian Leisenheimer scored when Eric White (Brewer, Maine) grounded out. Justin Leisenheimer scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) grounded out.
Stony Brook took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Willie Carmona tripled to left field and scored when Tissenbaum singled up the middle.
The Seawolves extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with four runs. Peragine and Courtney had back-to-back hits with no outs. Jankowski was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Peragine scored when Cantwell hit a sacrifice fly. Carmona then homered over the right field fence, giving the Seawolves the 11-6 lead.
The Seawolves added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 13-6 final.
Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao), who closed out the first game, got the start for the Black Bears. He went 2.1 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. Fran Whitten (Westbrook, Mass.) replaced Balentina on the mound. Whitten went 3.2 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. He picks up the loss and falls to 2-4 on the season. Mike Connolly (Westborough, Mass.) went one third of an inning and allowed two runs on a hit. Scott Heath replaced (Westbrook, Maine) replaced Connolly on the mound. He went one third of an inning. Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) also went a third of an inning for the Black Bears. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) pitched the bottom of the eighth and allowed a pair of runs.
Evan Stecko-Haley went allowed six runs on five hits over three innings. He was replaced by James Campbell who went four innings. He allowed a pair of hits. Frankie Vanderka pitched the final two innings for the Seawolves.
