Baseball Falls to Stony Brook in America East Tournament Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) belted a three-run home run, but it was not enough as the University of Maine baseball team dropped its opening game of the 2012 America East Tournament 14-6 on Wednesday afternoon to Stony Brook. The Black Bears fall to 26-27 on the season with the loss, while Stony Brook improves to 44-11.
Stony Brook got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Travis Jankowski singled and Pat Cantwell followed and was hit. Both runners advanced a base on an error. William Carmona walked to load the bases. Maxx Tissenbaum doubled to the right field corner, driving home both Jankowski and Cantwell.
The Seawolves added four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kevin Krause singled to right center and Jankowski followed with a singled to left field. Cantwell then belted a triple to deep center field driving in both runners. Cantwell scored the third run of the inning when William Carmona grounded out. Tissenbaum doubled and scored when Tanner Nivins reached on an error.
Stony Brook extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Courtney singled and scored when Cantwell singled to third base.
Maine got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled. Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) drew a walk. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) reached on an error driving home Fransoso. Whitten then belted a three-run home run high over the right field fence, pulling Maine to within three runs. For Whitten, it was his second home run of the season.
The Seawolves extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tissenbaum led off the inning with a singled to left field and Nivins followed with a walk. Cole Peragine was intentionally walked to load the bases. Tissenbaum scored on a wild pitch. Nivins scored the second run of the inning when Courtney lined out. Peragine scored when Krause singled to center field. Krause, who moved to third on a wild pitch, scored when Jankowski singled to shortstop.
Maine got a run in the top of the seventh inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled and scored when Fransoso singled to left field and then advanced to second on an error.
Tissenbaum walked and scored when Peragine singled to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning. Steven Goldstein, who singled, and Peragine both scored when Courtney singled to center field.
Maine got a run in the top of the eighth inning. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) singled and scored when twin brother, Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) singled to center field.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) started on the mound for the Black Bears. He went two innings and allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on six hits. He falls to 4-5 on the season. Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) replaced Coughlin on the mound. Gibbs went 4.2 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits. He was replaced by Steve Trask (Saco, Maine). Trask went 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit.
Tyler Johnson went 7.2 innings on the mound for the Seawolves. He allowed six runs, however, just one of them was earned. He improves to 9-1 on the season. He was replaced by Matt Gallup who went the final 1.1 innings.
The Black Bears now face Albany in an elimination game on Thursday, May 24 at 11 AM at Joe Nathan Field in Stony Brook, N.Y.
