Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Stony Brook

ORONO, Maine -- The Stony Brook University baseball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine on Friday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono. The Black Bears fell in the first game 5-1 and dropped the nightcap 5-4. Maine falls to 26-24 on the season and 11-9 in America East play, while the Seawolves improve to 41-11 overall, 19-3 in conference play.
In the first game, Stony Brook jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Travis Jankowski led off the game with a single to left field and scored when William Carmona grounded out. The Seawolves added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Tanner Nivins walked and scored when Cole Peragine singled.
Stony Brook extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the seventh inning. William Carmona walked and Maxx Tissenbaum reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners scored when Nivins tripled to center field. Nivins scored when Peragin doubled to left center.
Maine got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled to shortstop. He moved to second when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) walked. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Gay scored when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) hit a sacrifice fly.
Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) got the start for Maine and went 4.2 innings. He allowed a run on eight hits and falls to 4-5 on the season. He was replaced by Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) who allowed four runs, just two of which were earned, on four hits.
Tyler Johnson went five innings on the mound for Stony Brook and allowed just three hits. He improves to 8-1 on the season. Frankie Vanderka went the final two innings to record his fifth save of the season.
In the second game, Stony Brook got on the board with a run in the top of the first inning. Jankowski singled and scored when Carmona grounded out.
Maine tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Scott Heath belted his second home run of the season over the right field fence.
Maine took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Calbick walked and Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) followed with a double down the left field line, sending Calbick to third base. Calbick scored on a passed ball. Leisenheimer scored when Whitten grounded out, giving Maine the 3-2 lead.
Stony Brook pulled to within one run when Jankowski homered over the right field fence in the top of the fifth inning.
Maine regained the two run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Heath and Calbick led off the inning with back-to-back hits. Heath scored when Whitten grounded out.
Stony Brook got the run back in the top of the seventh inning when Steven Goldstein homered to lead off the frame. The Seawolves took the lead in the top of the eighth inning with a pair of runs. Pat Cantwell walked and scored when William Carmona doubled to centerfield. Carmona scored when Nivins grounded out.
Maine threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning, but was unable to push across the tying run.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) replaced Coughlin on the mound. Balentina allowed two runs on three hits over 2.1 innings. He falls to 3-1 on the season.
Brandon McNitt started the game for Stony Brook. He went five innings and allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. Jasvir Rakkar replaced NcNitt and went the final four innings. He allowed just one hit. He improves to 5-2 on the season.
The two teams complete their four-game weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 19 starting at 1 PM at Mahaney Diamond. Maine will honor its seniors prior to the game.
