Day One Complete at America East Championships

BOYDS, MD. – Day one of the America East Championships from the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds Md., featured the men's one meter dive, the 800 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. The Maine women ended the night in seventh place with 48 points while the Maine men ended the evening with a fourth place standing and 81 points.
Freshman, Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) was making his highly anticipated debut for Maine in his first America East post season action. The freshman did not disappoint as he grabbed a third place finish in the one meter dive with a preliminary score of 248.95 and a final score of 505.50.
In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the Maine women, composed of Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.), Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario), Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) and Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) managed a seventh place finish in a time of 7:43.68. The Black Bear Men also earned points as a team of Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.), Robert Bickford (Milford, Maine) and Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) turned in a fifth place finish in a time of 7:01.39.
The final event of the evening was the 200 yard medley relay. For the women, the event brought on an impressive school record time. The team of Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.), Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) and Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) landed the school record and with it, another seventh place finish in a time of 1:47.16. For the men, the team of James Forest (Columbia, Md.), Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.), Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) and Meehan earned themselves another fifth place finish in a time of 1:36.19.
Maine men's and women's Swimming and Diving will next hit the pool tomorrow, February 18 for day two of the America East Championships in Boyds, Md. The day's events are set to kick off at 10 a.m.
