Two Days Down at America East Championships

BOYDS, MD. – Day one of the AEC's from the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds Md., saw the Maine Men clinch to a fourth place standing, while the women were looking up at the field from seventh. Now, day two has passed and after 14 events the men have held their slim fourth place lead with 118 points (two points up on fifth place Stony Brook) and the Women have managed to cut the gap on sixth place Stony Brook to five points, with 109 in total.
On a day that did not see many Black Bear triumphs, there were three finishes in particular that kept Maine's hope alive for strong finishes in the second half of the championships. For the women, there were two particular individuals who carried the scoring; Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) was able to break into the major point scoring with a seventh place finish in the 200 yard individual medley. She recorded a preliminary time of 2:05.75, which set a new school record for Maine, surpassing teammate, Jennifer Trodden's 2010 record of 2:06.69 and then a final time of 2:06.79.
In the diving portion of today's events, the women's three meter dive took center stage, and that meant it was time for Maine freshman sensation, Kara Capossela (Greenwhich, Conn.) to shine. She managed just that as she placed fourth with a preliminary score of 237.85 and then a final score of 477.70.
For the men, there were no diving finals on the day, so that left the Maine swimmers in control of holding their lead over fifth place, Stony Brook. Thankfully for the squad, the swimmers were able to do just that as sophomore, Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) posted a 12thplace finish in the 500 yard freestyle with a preliminary time of 4:42.25 and an even more impressive final time of 4:40.90 (Bettering the time differential by nearly a staggering two seconds between heats).
Maine men's and women's Swimming and Diving will next hit the pool tomorrow, February 19 for day three of the America East Championships in Boyds, Md. The day's events are set to kick off at 10 a.m. with the prelims and then the championship finals at 6:00 p.m.
