Women's Hockey Skates to a Draw against Providence, 3-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The University of Maine women's hockey team skated to a tie today with the Providence College Friars by a score of 3-3. The tie changes the Black Bears record to 6-4-1 and 2-2-1 in Hockey East play while the Friars' record changes to 2-6-3 and 1-2-1 in conference action. Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.), Brittney Huneke (Hastings, Minn.) and Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec) all found the back of the net for the Black Bears.
Maine struck first when Brittany Dougherty netted her seventh goal of the season at 14:11. Melissa Gagnon (St. Giles, Quebec) assisted Dougherty on the play for the Black Bears to take a 1-0 lead. Providence evened the score at 15:23 on a goal by Laura Veharanta with assists coming from Abby Gauthier and Maggie Pendleton. The game would remain tied at 1-1 for the remainder of the first period.
With less than five minutes remaining, Ashley Cottrell tied the game for the Friars at 3-3 with assists being earned by Abby Gauthier and Jennifer Friedman. Cottrell's goal would be enough to send the game into overtime where at the end of the additional five-minute period, the game was finalized at a draw of 3-3.
The Black Bears out shot the Friars by a total of 28-23. Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) faced 23 shots and stopped 20 of them, giving her a record of 3-3-1 on the season. Providence goalie Nina Riley stopped 25 of the 28 shots she faced for a record of 1-0-2. Maine went 2-for-9 on the power play while Providence went 1-for-4 with the advantage.
The two teams will face each other again tomorrow in Providence at 2 p.m.
