Women's Hockey Falls to Providence, 7-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell to the Providence College Friars today by a score of 7-4. The loss drops the Black Bears record to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in conference play while the Friars improve their record to 3-6-3 and 2-2-1 in Hockey East play. Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba), Tori Pasquariello (Mississauga, Ontario), Chloe Tinkler (Wabush, Newfoundland), and Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec) all scored for the Black Bears in today's game.
Maine took an early lead just over three minutes into the first period on a goal by Chloe Tinkler, her fourth of the season to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead. The play was assisted by Dominique Goutsis (Coquitlam, British Columbia) and Ashley Norum (Fairbanks, Alaska). Eight seconds later at 3:17, Providence tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Allison Micheletti, assisted by Nicole Anderson and Victoria Virtue. At 11:18, Providence struck again on a goal by Beth Hanrahan. The assists on the play came from Corinne Buie and Emily Groth, giving the Friars a 2-1 lead through one period of play.
Maine tied the game just three minutes into the second period on Tori Pasquariello's first career goal. Missy Denk (Poplar Grove, Ill.) and Megan Menotti (Vernon Hills, Ill.) earned assists on the play. The assist for Menotti was her first career point. Providence retook the lead at 12:25 on a goal by Corinne Buie, assisted by Christie Jensen, giving the Friars a 3-2 lead with under eight minutes to play in the second period. Providence increased their lead at 16:49 on a power play goal by Rebecca Morse, making the score 4-2. Abby Gauthier and Laura Veharanta were able to assist on the play for the Friars.
Just over two minutes into the third period, Jessica Cohen found the back of the net for Providence to give the Friars a 5-2 lead. Assisting on the play was Kate Bacon. Providence then notched another goal at 6:35 by Maggie Pendleton on a power play, giving the Friars a 6-2 lead over the Black Bears. Laura Veharanta and Abby Gauthier helped Pendleton on the play for the assists. Jessica Vella then tallied one more goal for the Friars at 16:26 for a 7-2 lead. The goal also came on a power play and was assisted by Jennifer Friedman and Rebecca Morse. The Black Bears fought back and scored at 17:32 by Chloe Tinkler, her first of the seaosn, changing the score to 7-3. Assisting on the play was Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) and Jennifer More. Myriam Croussette was able to help cut the lead to the Friars' lead to three on a power play goal with 32 seconds to play. Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) and Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) were able to assist Croussette on the play, making the score 7-4. The goal raised her total to eight on the year. However; at the end of regulation, the Friars emerged victorious by a final score of 7-4.
Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) stopped 28 of 34 shots through 46:35 of play. Taking the loss, her record drops to 3-4-1 on the season. Kylie Smith (Apple Valley, Minn.) saved four of the five shots she faced during her 12:54 of play. Friar goalie Nina Riley blocked 27 of 29 shots by the Black Bears while in net for 57:26 of the game. Riley's record improves to 2-0-2 on the season. Hillary Drake relieved Riley for 2:34 and made four saves on six shots.
Maine went 1-for-6 on the power play while Providence was 3-for-4.
Maine will host Niagara for a weekend series starting Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
