Croussette Leads Maine Past UConn. 4-3

STORRS, Conn.--The University of Maine women's ice hockey team defeated UConn 4-3 on Friday night in Storrs, Conn. With the win, the Black Bears improve their record to 5-2-0 and 1-0-0 in Hockey East play. Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec) had a goal and two assists for the Black Bears. Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.), Missy Denk (Popular Grove, Ill.) and Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) were all also able to find the back of the net to help Maine earn their first conference win of the season.
Maine was first to strike when Dougherty notched her second goal of the season just 2:25 into the game with assists coming from Croussette and Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.). The Huskies responded nearly four minutes later with a goal by Kelly Horan from Caitlin Hewes and Sami Evelyn. Missy Denk would then recover the lead for Maine scoring her fifth goal of the season, giving Croussette her second assist of the game and Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) her first point of the season 11:24 into the period.
Late in the first period, Crousette would tally her sixth goal of the season with an assist from Tori Pasquariello (Mississauga, Ontario).
Jennifer More scored her third goal of the season at 11:58 for the Black Bears. With two periods in the books, Maine had a 4-1 advantage over Connecticut.
In the third period, UConn narrowed the lead with a goal from Rachel Farrel with assists being credited to Sami Evelyn and Kayla Compero 9:24 into the period. The Huskies would strike again nearly five minutes later on a goal by Caitlin Hewes, coming from Jocely Slattery and Stephanie Raithby. The Black Bears were able to hold the Huskies off for the remainder of the game, earning their fifth win of the season.
Goaltender Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) faced 27 shots, stopping 24 of them to earn her second victory of the season, improving her record to 2-1-0. Connecticut goalie Alexandra Garcia was given the loss after allowing three of the four goals scored by Maine, giving her a season record of 0-2-2. Nicole Paniccia made 21 saves for the Huskies through 42:47 minutes of play.
Maine outshot UConn 31-27 in the game. The Black Bears finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while UConn finished 2-for-6.
The Black Bears and Huskies will go at it again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn.
