Black Bears Compete on Day One of Dartmouth Invitational

HANOVER, N.H. -- The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed on day one of the Dartmouth Invitational. After day one, the women currently sit in fourth place with 167 total points while the men are fifth with 77 points.
The meet kicked off with the women's 200 yard medley. The top finishing team for the Black Bears consisted of Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine). They finished seventh in the event with a time of 1:52.87. The Black Bears also took home tenth place in the event as Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.), Dana Wright (Twin Falls, Idaho), Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) and Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) finished at 1:56.46.
Bender and Thornbrough also had strong performance in the 1000 yard freestyle as Bender placed seventh in 10:48.41 while Thornbrough was tenth at 10:51.68.
Shelley and sophomore Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) were the top finishers for Maine in the 200 IM. Shelley placed seventh with a final time of 2:13.14 while Trodden was just over a second behind Shelley, placing ninth at 2:14.17.
A pair of freshman led the Black Bears in the 50 yard freestyle as Puleio placed 13th at 25.34 while Dwyer took home 16th place in the event with a final time of 25.56.
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) had her streak of 14 straight wins snapped as she placed fifth in the one meter with a score of 227.80.
Maine took home sixth and seventh place in the 400 yard freestyle relay as the team of Trodden, Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.), Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) and Kara Dubiel placing sixth at 3:43.78. Following up the sixth place team was the team of Thornbrough, Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.), Grace Barnett (Bangor, Maine) and Rebecca Bonnett (Bath, Maine) who placed seventh at 3:49.62.
The men kicked things off with a tenth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.25. Racing the event for the Black Bears was Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md.), Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.), Andrew MacKeil (Biddeford, Maine) and Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine).
Senior captain Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) led the charge in the 1000 yard freestyle, placing tenth with a time of 10:04.49 while Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) placed 15th at 10:17.94. Forest was the top finisher for the Black Bears in the 200 yard IM as he placed 17th out of 39 swimmers with a time of 2:02.73.
Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) was the top diver on the men's side as he placed eighth in the three meter event with a final score of 237.70.
The Black Bears' 400 yard freestyle relay team placed eighth with a final time of 3:20.75. Swimming the event for Maine was Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), Danny Duvall (Durham, N.H.), Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt.), and Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.).
The Black Bears return to action as they finish up the Dartmouth Invitational tomorrow at 10 a.m.
