
Black Bears Swim Against Bowdoin on Senior Day at Wallace Pool

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams battled Bowdoin College in a non-scored meet on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Pool. It was senior day for the Black Bears as the swim and dive teams honored their seniors with a ceremony prior to the start of the meet. This year's seniors who were honored were Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.), Sara Knight (Gardiner, Maine), Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.), Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.), Zach Cravens (Ellsworth, Maine), Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) and Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt.).
The women kicked things off with a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:52.25. Swimming on the winning team for Maine were Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Shelley, Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine).
Rebecca Bonnett (Bath, Maine) and Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) led the way for the women as they both won two events. Bonnett was first in both the 200 yard backstroke (2:21.07) and the 400 IM (4:56.67) while Trodden won the 50 free in 25.48 and the 100 yard freestyle in 54.91.
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) won her 13th and 14th straight diving events as she was first in the one meter dive at 228.83 and just shy of the school-record in the three meter, winning the event with a score of 261.23.
Dwyer picked up a win in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.01 and was third in the 100 freestyle at 56.06. The Black Bears had the top five finishers in the 200 freestyle event. Smrcina added a win for Maine in the 200 yard butterfly event, touching the wall at 2:14.79. Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) won the 1650 yard freestyle race with a time of 11:09.95 and was third in the 50 freestyle at 26.58.
Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) had another strong day for Maine as she won the 100 yard fly at 1:02.08 and was second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.38, just a few ticks behind Dwyer.
The women's team finished out the meet with another relay win, this time placing first in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:42.60. Swimming this winning relay event for Maine were Puleio, Trodden, Dwyer and Bond.
On the men's side, it was Wonsor who led the way as he won the 100 yard freestyle in 49.80 and was third in the 200 freestyle at 1:50.73. Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) also scored a victory for Maine as he touched the wall first in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.85.
Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) continues to shine on the diving boards for Maine as he won both events today. Smith was first in the one meter with a final score of 273.60 and first in the three meter at 268.35.
Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla.) and Andrew MacKeil (Biddeford, Maine) each picked up a pair of second place finished for the Black Bears. Warren was second in both the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.02) and the 100 yard freestyle (50.12) while MacKeil placed second in the 100 yard backstroke (59.39) and the 100 yard butterfly (54.92). Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass.) also placed second in two events as he was second in the 400 IM at 4:32.08) and also placed second in the 1650 freestyle, touching the wall at 10:37.05.
Bender scored a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle at 1:50.61 while Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up a second place honor in the 200 IM with a final time of 2:05.55.
The Black Bear men's relay teams scored a pair of second place finishes. Daniel Duvall (Durham, N.H.), Warren, MacDonald and Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) placed second in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:32.34. Placing second in the 200 medley relay were Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md.), Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.), Meehan and Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine), with a final time of 1:42.38.
The Black Bears return to action next weekend when they take part in the two day Dartmouth Invitational held in Hanover, N.H. Day one begins Friday at 5 p.m. with the meet starting back up on day two on Saturday at 10 a.m.
