
Swim and Dive Teams Sweep Providence

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming and diving squads returned home Saturday afternoon to Wallace pool where they swept the Providence College Friars. The men's team defeated Providence 185-110 while the women were victorious by a score of 207-84. As a team, the women won 14 events on the day while the men placed first in 12 events. Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.), Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.), and Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.), and Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) all had two wins to lead the women's team. Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) and Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) each had a pair of wins on the men's side.
The women kicked things off by taking the top two spots in the 200 yard medley relay. The winning squad was made up of Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Shelley, Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine) with the winning pace set at 1:52.40.
Shelley dominated the breaststroke events as she won both the 100 and 200 yard events. Shelley was first in the 100 back at 1:09.25 and also won the 200 at 2:30.57. Bender took home first place honors in the 1000 yard freestyle at 10:48.15 and was also first in the 200 yard backstroke at 2:14.04. Thornbrough paced Maine in the 200 yard fly, winning with a time of 2:11.93, and also touched the wall first in the 500 yard freestyle at 5:17.66.
Capossela continues to dominate on the diving boards as she won her 11th and 12th straight event she has entered. Capossela swept the diving events for Maine, placing first in both the one meter and three meter events.
Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) picked up a win in the 100 yard freestyle at 55.50 and was second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.63. Puleio won the 50 yard freestyle event at 25.29 and was second in the 100 yard freestyle at 56.60. Freshman Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) picked up a first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke at 1:02.55 and was runner-up in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:30.57. Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) scored for Maine in three events as she won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:58.59, was second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.98 and placed third in the 50 yard freestyle at 25.29. Smrcina won the 100 yard fly event in 1:00.12.
On the men's side, Jimmy Forest (Columbia, Md.) Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.), Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) and Daneil Duvall (Durham, N.H.) teamed up to win the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.19.
Bender was solid all day for Maine as he won both the 1000 yard freestyle and the 200 yard fly. Bender finished the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:04.37 and touched the wall in first in the 200 fly at 2:00.53. Bender was also second in the 200 yard backstroke at 2:03.35. Chornobil also picked up two wins and a second place finish as he won the 200 yard freestyle at 1:48.15, the 500 yard freestyle in 4:53.35 and was second in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:20.88.
Landry swept the breaststroke events as he was first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.50 and won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.61. Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) won the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 50.49 while Forest placed first in the 100 yard backstroke at 56.33. Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla.) won the 50 freestyle event at 22.94. Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) had a solid day with three second place finishes. Meehan was second in the 200 freestyle at 1:49.91, the 50 yard freestyle at 23.02 and the 100 fly with a time of 54.14.
Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) continues to impress on the diving boards as he won both the one meter and three meter events for Maine.
The Black Bears swim back into action at Wallace Pool next Saturday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m.
