Black Bear Swimming and Diving Compete at URI Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams competed at the URI Invitational over the weekend. The women's team finished third with 574 points while the men's team placed fourth with 622 points. Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) led the men's team with a pair of distance wins and a fourth place finish while Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) had a third, fifth and seventh place finish for the women. Freshman diver Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) swept the diving events for the Black Bears and has now won the last eight diving events that she has entered.
On the women's side, Shelley took third place in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:08.45. Shelley was fifth in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:30.12 and seventh in the 200 yard IM at 2:16.69. Shelley was followed closely in the 200 yard breaststroke by Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) who placed fourth at 2:29.83. Trodden took home sixth place in the 200 IM at 2:16.44 and was sixth in the 400 IM at 4:52.26. Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz) scored points for Maine with a third place finish in the 1000 freestyle at 10:56.58. Nicole Langlois (Washington D.C.) was also strong in the 1000 freestyle, placing fourth at 11:07.22. Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) placed fourth in the 100 fly at (1:00.52).
Capossela was dominant on the diving boards, winning the eighth straight event she has entered. Capossela was first in the one meter with 232.50 points and also won the three meter with 238.40 points.
On the men's side, Chornobil won a pair of distance events for the Black Bears. He won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.50 and won the 1000 freestyle at 10:02.41. Chornobil also scored in the 200 yard freestyle, placing fourth at 1:48.85. Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) won the 400 IM event with a time of 4:17.09. Bender was also fourth in both the 500 freestyle and the 200 fly at 4:56.81 and the 2:01.93, respectively.
Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) placed third in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke with times of 1:01.46 and 2:13.86, respectively. Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) placed fourth 1000 freestyle at 10:19.56 and was fifth in the 400 IM at 4:26.72. Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) had a strong showing in the 100 yard fly at 54.15.
Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) won the three meter dive event with a score of 223.55 and was second in the one meter at 246.40. Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) was third in both the one and three meter dives with points of 172.65 and 185.95, respectively.
Maine's best showings in the relay races both came in the 200 freestyle relays. The women's team of Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine), Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.), Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), and Trodden placed fourth in the race at 1:41.77. The men's team of Meehan, James Forest (Columbia, Md.), Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.), Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla.) placed fifth in the race with a time of 1:31.21.
The Black Bears return to action on Dec. 11 when they swim at Bates College at 1 p.m.
