
Former Black Bear Montell Owens Named to NFL Pro Bowl

ORONO, Maine--Former University of Maine football standout Montell Owens has been named to the AFC roster for the NFL Pro Bowl. Owens was named as the special teams player.
Owens, the first alternate for the AFC Pro Bowl team last season, led the Jacksonville Jaguars with 18 special teams tackles, notching at least one tackle in 12 of the 15 games so far this season.
Last year, he set the Jaguars franchise record with 30 special teams tackles, and is one short of the career record with 93 special teams tackles in 77 career games.
Owens played for the Black Bears from 2002-05, and helped lead the team to the 2002 Atlantic-10 championship. He played in 38 career games, notching 1,038 yards. Owens was honored with the Black Bears' Jack Butterfield Outstanding Offensive Player Award after his senior season where he led the team with 779 yards on the ground.
Owens is one of seven former Black Bears currently on NFL rosters, with the others being Matt Mulligan and Mike DeVito with the Jets, Stephen Cooper with the Chargers, Jovan Belcher with the Chiefs, Brandon McGowan with the Patriots and Lofa Tatupu with the Seahawks.
