
Swimming and Diving Defeats Bryant, Loses to Boston Univ.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams compeated in a dual meet Saturday afternoon against Boston University and Bryant University. The Black Bear women defeated Bryant by a score of 163.50-124.50 but dropped their meet against Boston University, 169-124. The Maine men defeated Bryant by a score of 181-113 but also lost to Boston University, by a score of 185-109. Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) led the way for the women as she won the 50 yard breaststroke event, setting a new school record in the event. Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) led the way on the men's side as he won both the 200 yard fly and the 400 IM while taking home second place in the 1000 freestyle.
Shelley had a career day in the pool for the Black Bears as she won the 50 yard breaststroke event with a new school-record time of 31.16. Shelley broke the old school record that was set by Lynn McPhail in 1987 as she swam the event in 31.86. Shelley also finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.38 and was third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:48.04.
Freshman Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) won the 400 IM for the Black Bears, touching the wall at 4:45.84. Bender was second in the 500 yard freestyle and fifth in the 50 yard backstroke.
Fellow freshman Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) won the 50 yard fly event for Maine, finishing with a time of 27.98. Grace Barnett (Bangor, Maine) followed right along Dwyer as she placed second in the 50 yard fly with a time of 28.35.
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) took home fourth place in both the one meter and three meter diving events for Maine. Capossela scored a 233.63 in the one meter event and a 228.83 in the three meter.
The Black Bear women also had strong showing in the 200 free relay. The team of Carmen Lindne (Ottawa, Ontario), Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine), Desirae Deveaux (North Andover, Mass.) and Dwyer won the event with a time of 1:41.97. The team of Sara Knight (Gardiner, Maine), Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.), Barnett and Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.) placed second in the event with a time of 1:43.59.
On the men's side, Bender took home first place in the 200 yard fly at 1:59.48 and also won the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.54. Bender touched the wall at 10:07.33 which was good for second place in the 1000 freestyle event.
Junior Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) had a strong showing in the 50 yard fly as he won the event with a time of 24.19.
The Black Bears took first, second and third place in the 400 IM as Bender won the event with Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) right behind him at 4:33.21. Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass.) took home third place in the event with a time of 4:33.44.
Capossela also finished second in the 500 yard freestyle event with a time of 4:55.18.
Freshman diver Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) took home a pair of third place finished in each diving event. Smith was third in the one meter event with a score of 216.53 and third in the three meter dive with a final score of 225.60.
Junior Brian Landry took home second place in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:14.80 while Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) was fourth in the 200 freestyle at 1:48.85.
The men also had a strong showing in the 200 free relay event. Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla.), Daniel Duvall (Durham, N.H.), Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), and James Forest (Columbia, Md.) finished in second place in the event with a time of 1:30.42. Senior captains Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt.) and Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) along with Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) and Landry teamed up to finish third in the event, touching the wall at 1:31.77.
The two teams return to action on Friday, Oct. 29 when they travel to take on Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. at 6 p.m.
