
Women's Swimming Downs Bryant, Men Drop Meet at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The University of Maine women's swimming team defeated Bryant by a score 154-108 while the Black Bear men's team dropped their meet to Bryant 146-116. Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) led the women's team with a pair of wins while Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) won the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke races for the men's team.
The women started things off with a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.91. Members of the winning team included Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine), Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.), Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine).
Trodden had a great day for the Black Bears, picking up a pair of wins as well as a second place finish. Trodden touched the wall first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.91 and placed first in the 200 breaststroke event with a final time of 2:29.22. Trodden took home second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.42. Senior captain Shelley won the 100 breaststroke event for the Black Bears with a time of 1:09.17. Shelley was second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:30.64 while she followed up Trodden in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.50.
Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) had a career day for the Black Bears with a pair of wins. Thornbrough won the 200 fly event with a time of 2:15.58 and also touched the wall first in the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.80.
Hahn and Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) each had a pair of second place finished for Maine. Hahn was second in the 100 and 200 backstroke events with times of 1:01.83 and 2:09.89, respectively. Sacco took home second place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.39 and was also second in the 100 free with a time of 55.23.
The Black Bear 400 yard freestyle relay took first place at 3:19.50. Swimming the free relay for Maine was Sacco, Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine), Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.), Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.)
On the men's side it was Landry leading the way with a pair of victories. Landry took first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.19 and was first in the 200 breaststroke at 2:16.03. Following up Landry in both events was Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass.). Hamer was second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.92 and was also second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:18.08.
Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) took home first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:56.65. Senior captain Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt.) was second in the 100 freestyle at 50.14 while fellow senior captain Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) was third in the 100 free at 50.31.
The men's 200 medley relay team placed second with a time of 1:40.76. Swimming the event for the Black Bears were James Forest (Columbia, Md.), Landry, Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine), and Daneil Duvall (Durham, N.H.).
The Black Bears return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on URI at 12:00 p.m.
