Maine Finishes Third in 2015 America East Academic Cup Standings

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine student-athletes competing in the America East Conference posted a 3.21 cumulative grade point average this year to finish third in the 2015 America East Academic Cup standings. The women’s basketball team, the 2015 America East co-regular season champion, led all women’s basketball squads with a 3.39 GPA. They were one of just three teams to win a championship and finish with the highest GPA in their respective sport.

 

Hartford and New Hampshire tied for the 2015 America East Academic Cup, each posting a 3.23 grade point average. Maine was third at 3.21 followed by Vermont (3.16). Binghamton and UMass Lowell were tied for fifth, each recording a 3.10 GPA. UMBC and Stony Brook tied for seventh with a 3.08 GPA, while Albany compiled a 3.06 GPA.

 

It is the first time in America East Conference history that all schools compiled at least a 3.0 GPA. In addition, the conference average with a 3.14, marking the highest cumulative average in conference history. America East student-athletes have averaged greater that a 3.0 in each of the last 10 years.

 

In addition, 79% of America East teams (110-of 139) achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. All nine of Maine’s women’s sports teams recorded a 3.00 GPA or better this season, led by women’s cross country and women’s ice hockey who each finished with a 3.46 GPA. Women’s basketball (3.39) and women’s swimming and diving (3.33) followed. Field hockey, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and soccer all finished with a 3.27 grade point average, while softball had a 3.25 GPA.

 

The men’s squads were led by the cross county team with a 3.31 GPA. They were followed by men’s ice hockey (3.21), indoor track and field (3.13), outdoor track and field 

The University of Maine is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2015. In conjunction with this, the athletic department will celebrate 150 student-athletes achievements over the next year.
