Sept. 8, 2009
University of Maine women's ice hockey head coach Dan Lichterman has named the players who will represent the squad as captains for the 2009-2010 season. Amy Stech (Duluth, Minn.) will serve as the team captain with Abby Barton (Woodstock, New Brunswick) and Lexie Hoffmeyer taking on the assistant captain responsibilities.
Stech, a senior forward, contributed last year with eight goals and three assists for the Black Bears. Stech has been a big part of the Black Bears team, playing in 98 total games and scoring 14 goals with seven assists during her career. She also represented the team as the assistant captain during the 2008-2009 season. Stech scored when it counted most, notching game-winning goals against North Dakota, Boston College and Union. She was also a Maine Scholar-Athlete award winner for the 2008-2009 season.
Barton, a senior forward, has played in 96 games as a Black Bear. During that time, she has compiled eight goals and nine assists. Barton scored a big goal in the upset victory over Boston College last season and also scored goals in back -to-back games against Sacred Heart. She also excelled off the rink last season, being named a Maine Scholar-Athlete award winner.
Hoffmeyer, a senior forward, will once again represent Maine as an assistant captain after doing so during the 2008-2009 campaign. Hoffmeyer has competed in 64 games as a Black Bear, scoring seven goals and racking up 16 assists during her career. Hoffmeyer tallied two assists in games against Sacred Heart, Boston College, Boston University and Northeastern.
"I am excited for our leadership group this season," said Lichterman. "These three have proven themselves to be the heartbeat of this team and their leadership styles compliment one another. These kids not only have the respect of our staff, but their teammates as well."
The Black Bears open up their season at home on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. against Sacred Heart University.
