ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's ice hockey team honored its players on Sunday, April 11, at the annual team banquet. The team honored its senior along with presenting five team awards.
Brittany Dougherty (Chesterfield, Mich.) was named the Most Improved Player. She saw action in 28 games as a freshman and scored three goals and added six assists for nine points. She was Maine's top scoring rookie. Dougherty was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week on Nov. 30.
The Rookie of the Year award went to Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) who saw action in 20 games in goal for the Black Bears. She finished 4-12-3 for the Black Bears with a 2.60 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. She picked up two shutouts on the season. Ott was named to the Women's Hockey East Association All-Rookie Team. Her best game of the season came on Nov. 15 when she made 34 saves and shut out ninth-ranked Northeastern 1-0 in a game played at Matthews Arena.
The Founding Mother's Black Bear Pride Award went to senior captain Amy Stech (Duluth, Minn.). It is the second straight year that the award has been presented to Stech. She saw action in all 31 games for the Black Bears and scored three goals and added five assists for eight points. She finished her career with an impressive 129 games played for the Black Bears. Stech played on the Women's Hockey East All-Star team earlier this season against the U.S. National Team.
The Coaches Three C Award was given by the coaching staff to the player who best represents character, consistency and commitment. The award was presented this year to Abby Barton (Woodstock, New Brunswick). Barton, an assistant captain, saw action in 29 games for the Black Bears. She scored five goals and added a pair of assists for seven points. She notched the game-winning goal in Maine's 4-0 win over Union on Dec. 12, 2009.
The Most Valuable Player Award was presented to senior Jenna Ouellette (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Ouellette led Maine in scoring with 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points. She led the team with five power play goals and a pair of game-winners. Ouellette was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Dec. 7 and followed that up by being named Hockey East Player of the Month for December. She was the first women's ice hockey player in Maine history to be named Player of the Month.
Nineteen of Maine's 24 players were named Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winners or rising stars. The Black Bear women's ice hockey team is also very active in community service projects. The women's ice hockey team won the 2008-09 Battle of the Bears.
