Preview: Top-10 road series up next for Black Bears

#5 Maine will travel to #7 Providence for a top-10 series this weekend at Schneider Arena

ORONO, Maine – The #5 University of Maine men's ice hockey team will travel to #7 Providence College this weekend for a top-10 series at Schneider Arena on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8.
 
Friday's puck drop is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's is slated for a 6 p.m. start. Both Hockey East tilts will stream on ESPN+, with an international stream available via Hockey East/Stretch Internet. The games can also be listened to via 92.9 FM or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio.

WHAT'S ON TAP
• The #5 University of Maine men's ice hockey team will travel to #7 Providence College for a top-10 series this weekend at Schneider Arena on Friday and Saturday.
• Maine earned wins at home over Northeastern (3-1) and #20 UMass (3-2).
• Providence went 1-0-1 in a home-and-home set against #9 UConn, tying 3-3 at home and winning 6-3 on the road.

• Move Maine to 18-5-3 on the year and 10-3-3 in Hockey East contests.
• Bump the Black Bears to 74-57-7 in the all-time series with the Friars.
 
SERIES HISTORY vs PROVIDENCE
• Maine has an overall record of 73-57-7 in the all-time series with Providence ... the Black Bears are 26-35-3 on the road against the Friars.
• The teams split a two-game set last season in Orono ... Maine won on Friday night, 2-1, while the Friars won the next night in overtime, 4-3.
Lynden Breen is Maine's active scoring leader against the Friars, notching seven points on two goals and five assists while Josh Nadeau (2-1-3) and Nolan Renwick (1-2-3) have three points each ... there are 13 current Black Bears with at least one point against the Friars.
• The squads first met on Jan. 5, 1980, with Providence topping Maine, 4-3, at Alfond Arena.
• The Black Bears had a 13-game unbeaten streak in the series (12-0-1) that ran from Feb. 9, 1991 to Feb. 3, 1995.
• Maine head coach Ben Barr spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Providence College with Nate Leaman (as well as three seasons together at Union) ... Leaman spent the 1998-99 season at Maine as a volunteer assistant coach for Shawn Walsh.
 
ABOUT PROVIDENCE
• The Friars enter Friday night's tilt at 16-6-4 overall and 6-5-4 in Hockey East play after going 1-0-1 against #9 UConn this past weekend.
• Will Logan leads Providence with 20 points from eight goals and 12 assists while Tanner Adams has a team-leading 10 goals and seven points for 17 assists.
• Philip Svedeback is 11-4-3 in between the pipes with a .915 save percentage and 2.39 goals against average … Zachary Borgiel is 5-2-1 with a .932 save percentage, 2.13 goals against average and two shutouts.
• As a team, the Friars are winning 54.6 percent of face offs to lead all of Hockey East and rank seventh in the country.
• The Friars are scoring 3.0 goals per game while giving up 2.4 goals per game.
• Providence has earned six wins over teams ranked at the time of the contest.
 
IT'S WORTH NOTING
• Maine is currently allowing just 1.8 goals against per game, tied for the best mark through the first 25 games of the season in program history ... it also currently ties for third overall in the country.
• Thirty-seven percent of Maine's goals have come in the first two minutes or last two minutes of a period.
Albin Boija is just the fifth Hockey East goaltender since the start of the 2005-06 season to post a goals against average below 1.65 in the first 24 games played ... his 1.62 GAA is currently the second-best mark in the country.
• Maine is third in the nation in goals allowed per game (1.8) and tied eighth in goals scored per game (3.4).
• The Black Bears have not been out-shot by the opponent in 28 straight contests dating back to last season and in 54 of 62 contests dating back to the start of the 2023-24 season.
• Maine is tied 10th nationally in face-off winning percentage (54.0) ... Harrison Scott's 57.6 winning percentage is fourth in the country among players with at least 275 wins.
• Maine is first in the country in shots allowed per game, giving up just 22.8 per outing.

• The Black Bears will return home for the Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle next weekend, hosting New Hampshire on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
