Sundby, Lahtinen earn Hockey East weekly awards

ORONO, Maine - Kendall Sundby and Kiia Lahtinen of the Maine women's ice hockey team have been named Hockey East players of the week, the conference announced Monday.

Sundby, a rookie defender from Hammond, WI, earned Hockey East's Defender of the Week award after tallying two points over the weekend. Sundby assisted the game-tying goal on Friday and scored the game-winning goal on Saturday against Merrimack. Sundby put up four shots on goal, blocked four shots and ended the weekend with a +3 rating. Kendall was named Defender of the Month in December, as this is her first weekly Hockey East accolade. Sundby leads the Black Bears' defensive core in points this season with four goals and five assists for nine points.

Lahtinen, a rookie goalie from Porvoo, Finland, earned Hockey East's Goaltender of the Week award after stopping 40 of 41 shots-faced this weekend for a .976 save percentage in the two games. Lahtinen's 19-save shutout on Saturday was her second of the career and second of this month. Kiia has played in 21 games this season for Maine holding a .910 save percentage. This award accounts for Lahtinen's second Hockey East weekly accolade.
