MINNEAPOLIS — Senior defenseman
David Breazeale is one of 14 nominees for the 2025 Hockey Humanitarian Award, as announced by the Hockey Humanitarian Award Foundation on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The award, which is celebrating its 30th season, is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team, but also to the community at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
Finalists for the 2025 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The 2025 recipient will be announced on Friday, April 11 during the NCAA Men's Frozen Four weekend in St. Louis. Penn State's Dylan Lugris was honored as the 2024 Hockey Humanitarian Award recipient. Boston University's J.P. McKersie was the inaugural recipient of the award in 1995. Jim Leger '00 is the lone Maine player to win the Hockey Humanitarian Award, receiving the honor at the 2000 Frozen Four in Providence, R.I., which the Black Bears played in.
Â
At Maine, Breazeale has served as a team captain for two seasons and worn a letter for three seasons – but has been a leader since he set foot on campus in 2021. Breazeale can be found spending his free time throughout the Orono and Greater Bangor community taking part in all community service opportunities. The UMaine Student Athlete Advisory Committee member spends time reading in local elementary schools and spends time on the ice with local youth teams, helping them learn the value of teamwork and determination throughout the year and at summer camps. He does everything from spending time building the haunted house at the Old Town YMCA to picking up trash along the Penobscot River.
Â
Within the University of Maine community, the double major in Sport Management and Marketing is a six-time Dean's List recipient and a three-time Presidential Scholar, two-time Scholar-Athlete medalist. Breazeale has also earned academic accolades outside of the University. He is a three-time AHCA All-American Scholar. Breazeale is also a two-time member of the Hockey East All-Academic All-Star Team, which is earned by having the highest GPA in the conference at a student-athlete's position, and is also a three-time member of the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
