Men's Basketball Falls against Penn on Saturday Evening

Philadelphia, PA - The University of Maine men's basketball program was defeated by Penn on the second day of the Cathedral Classic presented by Toyota, 77-64.

Maine jumped out to an early 9-6 lead after four minutes of action as they buried four of their first six shots.

Penn went on an extended 18-5 run to take a 22-15 lead into the second media timeout of the opening half.

The Black Bears responded with a 6-0 run midway through the first half to make it a one-possession game at 24-21.

Penn responded by pushing their lead to double-digits on a 12-4 run as the score stood at 36-25 with 5:23 left in the first half.

Maine trimmed the deficit down to six points as they trailed at halftime, 41-35.

Christopher Mantis led the Black Bears in scoring with 8 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range.

Kellen Tynes (7pts, 3reb,3ast) and AJ Lopez (7pts, 2ast) rounded out the top performers from the first half for Maine.

Maine came out in the second half and tied the contest up at 49-49.

The two sides began a back-and-forth battle throughout the second half as neither side took more than four points until 4:57 remaining in the contest when Penn pulled ahead by six points on a pair of free throws.

Maine was unable to come back from the deficit as they were defeated by Penn, 77-64.

Tynes finished with 15 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals in the contest.

Burns finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists while Lopez finished with 13 points and 3 assists.

Maine (4-4) wraps up the Cathedral Classic on Sunday afternoon as they take on Navy. Tip-off is scheduled for Noon.
