About the Black Bears
• Ben Barr was named the fifth head coach of the University of Maine men's ice hockey program. Barr comes to Orono after spending the previous five seasons at the University of Massachusetts, winning one national championship.
• The Black Bears played a game at both #19 Boston University and Merrimack College last weekend. Maine dropped the first game at BU 4-0, while they were also defeated by the Warriors, 5-0.
• The Black Bears enter the season with six new faces on the roster after seeing five players graduate or leave to pursue professional hockey.
• Four incoming freshmen and two transfers make up players who were added by the new coaching staff. Three of the incoming student athletes are from the United States, while the other three are from Canada.
• The three-member Class of 2025 includes Tim Gould, Nolan Renwick, Samuel Duerr, and David Breazeale. Matthew Fawcett and Grant Hebert are the three transfers who chose the University of Maine over their other offers.
About the Wildcats
• The University of New Hampshire finished the 2020-21 season with a record of 6-14-3, ultimately being defeated by Boston College in the Quarterfinal Round of the Hockey East Playoffs.
• UNH returns three of their top five scorers from 2020-21 in Jackson Pierson, Kalle Eriksson, and Filip Engaras.
• Mike Robinson appeared in 21 games last season. The senior goaltender posted a 3.32 GAA and .875 save percentage, while winning five total games for the Wildcats.
The Series with UNH
• Maine and UNH have squared off 141 times prior to Friday's game, with Maine holding an edge of 69-61-11 in the all-time series.
• The Black Bears and Wildcats battled met in the first round of the Hockey East playoffs last season, with UNH winning the contest.
• The Wildcats and Black Bears first played on Dec. 15, 1979 at Alfond Arena, with John Tortorella scoring the game-winning goal in the Black Bears' 5-3 victory.
• Maine has had two different nine-game winning streaks in the heated series.
• Current Maine assistant coach Alfie Michaud had seven career wins against UNH, including a stretch of five-straight beginning with a Feb. 1, 1998 win and stretching to the April 3, 1999 National Championship, 3-2, overtime win at Arrowhead Pond.
