Maine looking to extend its win streak to three-straight
Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball teams goes for its longest win streak of the season when it looks for its third consecutive win with a trip to UMass Lowell. Tip-off for Wednesday's game is scheduled for 11 a.m. The Black Bears, who enter play 16-2 all-time against the River Hawks, will look to avenge a 60-55 loss earlier this season to UMass Lowell. Maine is 6-1 all-time on the road against the River Hawks.
Wednesday's game will be televised live on NESN+, streamed live on ESPN+, and can be heard across the Black Bears Sports Network and locally on 92.9 The Ticket.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
Maine is riding a two game win streak. Over the past two games, Maine is holding opponents to just 41.0 points per game with 30 total steals (15.0 per game) and 30 turnovers forced. Anne Simon, just 48 points from 1,000 in her career, has posted double-digit scoring totals in each of her last 11 outings with four or more steals in three-straight games. Simon ranks second in the league in scoring (16.6) and first in steals (3.2). Simon's steals per game check her in ninth in the nation in the category while her 57 total steals are 14th most in the country. Simon is averaging a league-high 16.9 points per game in league competition. Alba Orois, with four or more assists in each of her last 10 outings, checks in 25th in the nation and tops in the America East at 5.6 assists per game. Orois, averaging 9.1 points per game, turned in a school-record matching 14 assist performance earlier this season against New Hampshire and is averaging 6.5 assist in league play. Maeve Carroll, one of just 17 Black Bears in school history with 600+ rebounds, ranks second in the league with 7.9 rebounds per game. Carroll, who has six double-digit rebounding performances this season, is averaging 9.9 points per game. Caroline Bornemann is shooting 52.8 percent from three-point range in league play and enters averaging 10.3 points per game against America East opponents with five double-digit scoring performances in league-play.
A LOOK AT UMASS LOWELL:
The River Hawks have won three of their last four outings but have not played since last Wednesday, having two games postponed in that span (vs. Hartford and at New Hampshire) due to COVID-19 issues within the Hawks and Wildcats programs. The River Hawks have no current players averaging double-digit scoring as they are led by Denise Solis' 9.9 points per game. Solis also leads the River Hawks in rebounding at 5.2 per game Kharis Idom is adding 8.4 points and a team-high 2.1 assists. UMass Lowell leads the America East in three-point shooting, hitting at a rate of 33.6 from beyond the arc.
SERIES WITH UMASS LOWELL:
Maine and UMass Lowell are meeting for the 19th time. Maine, 16-2 all-time against the River Hawks, won the first 12 games of the head-to-head series. Maine recently had its four-game win streak snapped against UMass Lowell with a 60-55 loss earlier this season to the River Hawks.
