Adrianna Smith registered her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds in a 65-51 loss to visiting Princeton on Friday evening.
Smith, who also added five assists in the game, was joined atop Maine's scoring column by
Caroline Bornemann who finished with nine points and five boards while
Paula Gallego chipped in eight points.
The Black Bears, who shot 53.8 percent in a strong second quarter and finished 6-of-8 in the fourth, turned the ball over 18 times to Princeton's seven in the contest.
Maine, which trailed by only one at the half, was outscored 36-23 in the second half.
The first half of action featured four ties and four lead changes in a see-saw battle with neither team leading by more than five.
The teams traded the lead three times through the opening 10 minutes, with Princeton leading 11-10 after one.
Princeton extended its lead to three early in the second before Hodgson's first triple of the evening knotted the game at 13-13.
Maine kept charging, eventually taking the lead on a pair of
Sarah Talon free throws with 6:17 left in the half.
The Tigers responded with a 6-0 run, taking the largest lead of the half at 24-19.
Maine had the answer as a pair of layups by Bornemann, the second of which coming off a turnover, tightened the gap to just one.
Princeton carried a slight 29-28 edge into the halftime break.
Maine kept within two points early in the third on a bucket and the harm from
Sarah Talon. Talon's free throw cut the deficit to a pair with 4:11 left in the third.
Princeton ended the period on an 8-0 run, stretching the lead to double-digits at 45-35 to end the third.
The Tigers' lead expanded to 15 with 5:55 left in regulation. Maine continued to battle.
The Black Bears cut the lead to single digits thanks to a late 7-0 run. Smith's second chance bucket precluded a triple from
Olivia Rockwood, bringing Maine within 10. Working off a Princeton turnover, Gallego slashed her way into the lane for two, cutting the lead down to 54-46.
However, it was as close as Maine could get as Princeton completed its victory, 65-51.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 4 when it travels to take on Rhode Island at 1 p.m.
