Simon, Rockwood lift Maine to season opening win at JMU

Harrisonburg, Va. -- Caroline Bornemann's bucket off an inbounds play with 1.4 remaining in regulation broke a 58-58 tie as the University of Maine women's basketball team opened its season with a 60-58 victory at James Madison on Monday evening.
Anne Simon, who tallied 17 second half points, led the Black Bears with 21 points, marking the 15th time in her career in which she's registered 20 or more points in a game. Olivia Rockwood finished with a career high 17 points with five triples while Bornemann chipped in 11 points and a career-high matching eight rebounds.
The Black Bears assisted on 14 of their 25 field goals, finishing the game 25-of-62 (40%) from the floor.
Maine trailed by nine midway through the second quarter. A pair of triples from Rockwood on either side of a Dukes bucket cut the lead to five. A jumper from Abbe Laurence and a layup from Simon came as part of a late 7-0 run, cutting the lead to one.
JMU would enter the half with a 27-24 edge.
The Dukes would open the second half on a 7-3 run, stretching the deficit out to seven early in the third quarter.
A 10-2 run by the Black Bears gave the visitors their first lead since the first quarter. Bornemann slashed through the paint for two before triples from Rockwood and Simon brought Maine to within a pair. Following a JMU bucket, Simon would stage a 5-0 run on her own with a three followed by a driving layup off a turnover. The hoop would put Maine on top, 37-36, with 2:51 left in the third quarter.
JMU would carry a one point cushion into the fourth quarter; a quarter which featured three lead changes and three ties.
With the Dukes leading by three early in the period, Maine would piece together a 7-0 run keyed on back-to-back buckets by Simon before Rockwood's fifth triple of the afternoon. The run would give Maine a 49-45 edge with 6:17 to play.
Maine's lead would remain at four with 1:13 left. However, a 4-0 run by the Dukes would knot the contest at 58-58 with 13 seconds left. A triple by Rockwood came up short but Adrianna Smith nabbed the offensive board, drawing a foul, to set Maine up with an inbounds play underneath its own hoop. Bornemann cut from the top of the key to the low block where Smith found her for the bucket.
The Dukes were unable to get a shot off on their final possession as Maine held on to the victory, 60-58.
Maine returns to action when it travels to meet UMass on Nov. 14.
