Caroline Bornemann registered a team-high 14 points in Maine's 76-49 loss to Kansas in the opening of the Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic on Friday afternoon.
Bornemann, who tallied her third double-digit scoring performance of the season to go along with seven rebounds, was joined in double figures by
Abbe Laurence who added 10 points and six rebounds in the contest.
The Black Bears fell in an early 9-0 hole but regrouped, answering with a 12-2 run to take an early 12-11 edge. Sera Hodgson's triple trimmed the lead to four before a Paula Gallego bucket brought the Black Bears within two. The Jayhawks responded with a two, before Maine's 5-0 run on a trey by Jaycie Christopher and a quick jumper but Laurence put Maine up one early in the first.
Kansas answered with a 13-0 run and took a 26-14 lead into the second.
Bornemann opened the second quarter with back-to-back triples, trimming the lead to six. The lead remained at six, on an
Olivia Rockwood bucket.
Kansas went on another late run to end the second to carry a 44-28 advantage into the break.
The Black Bears were unable to cut into the deficit in the second half, falling by a final of 76-49.
Maine returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET when it meets Niagara on day two of the Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic.
